Playing Site

As in 2004, the sectional will be held in the upstairs ballroom of Elks Lodge #1551, 1003 Pioneer Road, right on the north bank of the Chena River across from downtown. You can reach Pioneer Road off of Phillips Field Road or from Driveway Street next to the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner building and the train station.

There is an elevator to the upstairs ballroom for handicapped access. Bridge players will be welcome in the downstairs restaurant and bar before and after the game whether they are current Elks members or not.

Our regular club games, including those on August 2nd and 9nd, are still held at the North Star Council on Aging Senior Center, 1424 Moore Avenue.


Schedule of Events

Thursday 04 August: Open pairs, 1:00 and 7:00 PM.

Friday 05 August: Open pairs, 1:00 and 7:00 PM.

Saturday 06 August: Open pairs, 1:00 and 7:00 PM.

Sunday 07 August: Swiss teams, 10:00 AM and TBA.

The afternoon meal Sunday will be at the Alaska Salmon Bake at a special discounted price of $11.00 per person, less than half the normal cost. Free transportation between the playing site and the Salmon Bake provided.

Single-session entries accepted to all events. All events will be stratified. Card fees $8.00 per session, students half price. Special session for players new to duplicate Thursday evening if attendance permits. Canadian players: as in the past, we will accept your Canadian dollars at par for card fees.

About Fairbanks

Getting here - Fairbanks is served by Alaska and Northwest Airlines by a total of 15 jet flights a day. Nonstop service from Anchorage, Seattle, and Minneapolis, and same-plane service from most major West Coast airports plus Chicago and Denver. Contact Travelocity, Alaska Airlines, or your travel agent for fares and schedules. Canadian visitors can also try Air North, with service from Calgary, Edmonton, and Vancouver with an overnight stay in Whitehorse instead of flying via Seattle. Players arriving via Air North from Whitehorse and Dawson City should arrive in time for the afternoon session.

There is also a daily passenger train from Anchorage, and, of course, the Parks Highway from Anchorage and the Richardson and Alaska Highways from everywhere else. There is scheduled bus service from Anchorage and Whitehorse.

Climate - Normal weather for early August in Fairbanks is highs in the seventies, lows in the fifties, and a mix of sunshine and sprinkles. There will be 18 hours per day of daylight.

Accommodations - Fairbanks has a multitude of hotels and B&Bs. Closest to the playing site are the SpringHill Suites and the Bridgewater, in walking distance on the south side of the river.

What else to do in Fairbanks? The Tanana Valley State Fair starts August 5th. There are 3 golf courses (open 24 hours most of the summer). Local attractions include the University of Alaska Museum and Chena Hot Springs Resort. More information about the city of Fairbanks and things to do in the area can be found at FairNet.
